Kathryn Shailer was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. She majored in German and International Relations at Denison University, a small liberal arts college in Granville, Ohio; studied in Munich, Germany and travelled for two years; and then earned her MA and PhD from Princeton University, with a dissertation on German and Danish Romanticism.

Since immigrating to Canada in her mid-twenties, she has worked as an ESL instructor, marketing manager for a credit union, editor, university professor, researcher, and academic administrator. She is an alum of the Humber Summer Workshop in Creative Writing and the Banff Writers’ Studio

She has two daughters and three grandchildren, and is at home in both the Fraser Valley and southwest Ontario.
